Daring

About Us

True & Daring owners

We believe in being true and daring. In 2005, we took a nice old building in New Zealand and turned it into a mecca for fine wine. People thought we were mad,  but we dared to step out of our comfort zone and dared ourselves to make the best Riesling in the world. So far so good--our tiny corner of New Zealand took home a trophy for Best New Zealand Riesling and a Gold Medal at London's International Wine Challenge in 2010 and also one of only 20 world wines nominated for World Champion White Wine across all varietals! True & Daring is Riesling.  Riesling on the Richter scale:  true, intense, and serious. We will stay true to this one grape and be daring enough to take on only Riesling as the wine we produce. True & Daring has proven that through dedication and specialisation, great Riesling can come from the southern hemisphere. When we first started out, we dreamed of creating a deliciously intense Riesling on the Richter scale to complement the International Riesling Foundation sweetness scale.  That was long before two devastating earthquakes that hit Christchurch. We live in Christchurch, New Zealand; it is our home, and the earthquake has affected us, our family, friends and community.  We are all working towards rebuilding, one day at a time. But while our 2007 vintage survived the quake, our stock of the 2008 and 2009 vintages did not survive the damage. Nevertheless we are staying true to our conviction – making the best Riesling in the world. Our Philosophy: "Dare to Try & Be True to Yourself!" - Celia and Hennie Bosman True & Daring Owners & Winemakers: Celia Bosman As warm and gracious as she is graceful, former professional ballerina Celia is blessed with nerves of steel and the divine spark of adventure. Born in England and convent-educated, Celia graduated from The Royal Ballet School to travel the globe with the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet. It was in Portugal under Companhia Nacional de Bailado that she was swept off her finely-turned feet by Afrikaner Hennie (in the Foreign Service), only to be deposited in a state of marital bliss in South Africa. No sooner had she wiped the dust from her eyes and the happy couple been delivered of first-born Nicholas, than a posting to warring Mozambique came calling. Following the arrival of Sean (joyous) and a stint with the Women’s Diplomatic Corps (tedious), Celia returned en famille to SA. While husband and sons occupied themselves with commerce and growing up respectively, and not without her help, she invested her unlimited energies into her own personal training business. Life was good. Eventually, however, her finely-turned feet and Hennie’s slightly less dainty ones developed an itch that brought them all to New Zealand and to the development of their most true and daring adventure yet:  Riesling. Hennie Bosman South African born, erudite and possessed of a love of life and rapier wit, Hennie’s career path has been anything but average.  His is a story that combines a ponytail-wearing free spirit and a somewhat checkered past. Following rather alarming compulsory military service and the bewilderment of university, Hennie entered the Foreign Service anticipating lusty hedonistic thrills. Instead he received tour upon tour of feet-grounding hair-raising duty and a true appreciation of diplomacy in adversity. Hennie’s extraordinary life experiences and education more than adequately prepared him for his future ventures in the private sector. Since discovering that New Zealand makes some of the finest Riesling in the world, Hennie and wife Celia have cultivated an award-winning success. True & Daring has been honored with Best New Zealand Riesling and a Gold Medal in London’s 2010 International Wine Challenge. For this, Hennie credits tenacity, sheer hard work, his wife’s utter brilliance and their shared devotion to a fine drop of wine.

  • Nice richness to mid-palate, surprising minerality and really long finish. Really shows that NZ can make world-class Riesling.
